Using HelmMoney and people

Product guide

Make sense of money and people

Record loans, distinguish existing agreements from new money, and give shared costs context.

People helps explain money involving someone else. A person is the counterparty; a category describes the spending; a matter can group a shared purpose. These describe different parts of the same story.

Decide whether money is moving now

For a loan, choose the intent that matches reality:

  • Record loan and money together when you are lending or borrowing money now.
  • Record existing agreement when the agreement already exists and you are tracking it without recording the old money again.

This choice matters. Adding an existing loan as if it were new money can duplicate the original bank movement.

Record a loan carefully

  1. Open People and the loan-recording action.
  2. Identify the person and whether you lent or borrowed.
  3. Choose new money or an existing agreement.
  4. Provide the actual amount, currency and date requested by that intent.
  5. For new money, select the account that actually paid or received.
  6. Save and review the fresh people and account picture.

A fictional example: you lend EGP 500 to Sam on 5 October 2026 from Everyday account. The actual new-money path should reflect money leaving that account and a loan involving Sam. If the loan happened before your opening balance, use the existing-agreement path rather than recording that same old outflow again.

Add context to shared costs

Use a matter for a shared purpose, such as a fictional Weekend trip. A grocery category, Sam as the person, and Weekend trip as the matter can coexist. A tag can add another label without replacing them.

Creating a person or matter does not move money. Record actual spending or repayments separately when they happen.

Recover from an uncertain save

Use the offered recovery for the same action and inspect the updated agreement before creating another. If a repayment or agreement is linked or has changed, read the refusal before retrying a destructive change. Richer person views and sharing are planned.
